New Visions Assisted Living Helps Scottsdale Seniors Stay Connected During Arizona’s Summer Heat

Through live music, creative activities and community partnerships, the Scottsdale senior living residence helps residents stay socially engaged during the hottest months of the year.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Summer can make the world feel smaller for older adults, especially in Arizona, where extreme heat moves daily life indoors. Recent research shows that about one-quarter of community-dwelling Americans age 65 and older are considered socially isolated, and the CDC links social isolation and loneliness to increased risk for serious health conditions including dementia, heart disease, stroke, depression and premature mortality. At New Visions Assisted Living in Scottsdale, the boutique 10-resident home is responding with a summer rhythm built around live music, creative activities, light movement, resident choice and a growing effort to bring more community partners into daily life.

New Visions builds activities around the same principle that guides its care: personal attention. Instead of relying on a rigid calendar or large-group programming, the home brings in outside partners and adapts each week around resident interests, energy levels and the moments that make a day feel purposeful. For founder Wanda Forden, that approach matters even more during the summer, when extreme heat limits outdoor time and makes the home itself the center of daily life.

“Summer in Arizona takes a little extra planning, but it should still feel full,” Forden said. “We want residents to have things they look forward to each week, whether it’s live music on Friday, a creative project on Monday morning or one of those simple moments when everyone is clapping, singing and smiling together.”

One of the home’s newest points of connection comes through Audrey’s Angels, a nonprofit music program that brings live musicians into assisted living homes. Each week brings something different. Musicians have arrived with piano, guitar, saxophone and other instruments, filling the home with jazz, classical music and familiar favorites. Some weeks are soft and nostalgic. Others are upbeat, with residents tapping their feet, clapping, smiling, singing along or dancing from their seats. One resident especially loves Elvis, so the team often asks musicians to include his music when possible. It is a small detail, but at New Visions, small details are the point.

“In a larger setting, a favorite artist might get lost in the schedule,” Forden said. “Here, if we know someone lights up when they hear Elvis, we can ask for that. We can notice who is singing, who is smiling and who is remembering. That is what meaningful engagement looks like in a small home.”

Music is only one part of the summer rhythm. Monday mornings bring a different kind of energy through EnLIVEn Activities, which leads arts, crafts and activities for residents. Projects are often seasonal or holiday-themed, giving residents opportunities to create, reminisce and mark time. Other sessions bring out bingo or light movement activities, including racquet-based ball play.

What distinguishes New Visions Assisted Living’s summer engagement approach:

Music. Weekly Friday visits from Audrey’s Angels bring rotating musicians, instruments and styles into the home, from piano and guitar to saxophone, jazz, classical selections and familiar favorites.

Memory. Resident preferences help shape the experience, including requests for beloved artists such as Elvis when musicians are able to include them.

Creativity. Monday morning activities through EnLIVEn Activities include arts, crafts and seasonal projects tied to holidays and familiar moments throughout the year.

Movement. Light games and activities, including bingo and racquet-based ball play, create opportunities for coordination, laughter and gentle participation.

Connection. Activities are designed to give residents something to look forward to while encouraging shared moments among residents, staff and visiting partners.

Community. New Visions is actively seeking programs, performers, wellness providers, activity leaders and local organizations that align with its small-scale, resident-centered approach.

While Audrey’s Angels and EnLIVEn have become part of the weekly rhythm, Forden says New Visions is continuing to seek community partners who can bring the right mix of joy, movement, creativity and connection into the home. For New Visions, engagement is not about keeping residents busy. It is about creating moments that feel familiar, joyful and human, especially during a season when older adults spend more time indoors. In the middle of an Arizona summer, that kind of connection can feel like fresh air.
