Vern Johnson Is Creating Pathways to Healing Through Axiom Care

Johnson grew up in North Dakota in a family where service was simply part of life. His father worked at a school for students who were deaf, while his mother was a nurse practitioner at a time when relatively few women held the role. That early example would eventually shape a career devoted to helping people navigate some of life’s most difficult circumstances.

Johnson moved to Arizona in 1987 where he began working as a social worker in hospice care, quickly discovering that his interests in health care and business could intersect in an unexpected way: building compassionate systems that helped people feel seen and supported. Before turning 30, Johnson had helped open 17 hospice programs nationwide, gaining experience that would prove instrumental when he and his business partner, Duane Mantey, co-founded Axiom Care in 2012.

Today, Axiom Care is one of Arizona’s largest independently owned behavioral health and recovery providers, serving more than 4,000 Arizonans annually through housing programs and Arizona Department of Health Services-licensed facilities. The organization employs approximately 250 people and provides a continuum of services that includes observation, detoxification, residential treatment, outpatient care, transitional housing, and much more.

Yet Johnson measures that growth by the people behind those numbers.

His guiding philosophy is “patient before profit,” particularly when serving individuals facing substance use disorders, serious mental illness, trauma, homelessness or the challenges that often accompany reentry following incarceration. A significant portion of Axiom Care’s workforce is made up of people who have graduated from recovery programs themselves, giving clients the opportunity to work alongside individuals who understand firsthand what rebuilding a life can require.

That whole-person approach is increasingly visible throughout Axiom Care’s network.

Its Mofford Center Integrated Clinic in Phoenix brings together outpatient substance use and mental health treatment with peer support, creative expression, workforce development, and physical health care. Axiom Care also maintains a longstanding partnership with the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry, including transitional housing and programming designed to help justice-involved individuals, including those living with serious mental illness, successfully transition back into the community. The organization also works in partnership with the Navajo Division of Behavioral and Mental Health Services on a residential substance use treatment facility designed around culturally responsive treatment and support.

His impact extends beyond Axiom Care. Johnson is co-founder of Axiom Community of Recovery (ACR) a peer-focused nonprofit providing skills training and recovery support. ACR operates the John McCain Veterans Center, a 60-bed transitional housing program in Phoenix that connects veterans facing behavioral health, substance use, trauma and housing challenges with specialized support.

Beyond this, Johnson served on the Arizona Prison Oversight Commission and is a past board chair of one-n-ten as well as past chair of the Arizona Recovery Housing Association.

Nearly four decades after arriving in Arizona as a young social worker, Johnson is still building systems around the same basic principle that first drew him to health care: people deserve dignity when they need help most.
