What Are the Steps in Treating Varicose Veins with Endovenous Laser Therapy?
EVLT, or endovenous laser therapy, is a minimally invasive treatment option to eliminate varicose veins and the symptoms they cause. The EVLT procedure uses laser light to quickly and safely achieve the outcome you want for improved confidence in your appearance and greater everyday comfort.
Prior to your EVLT procedure, the area to be treated will be disinfected and a local anesthetic applied to ensure comfort during treatment.
A small, hollow needle will be placed into the vein requiring treatment and a laser probe threaded into the vein through the needle. Your vein doctor will guide the probe via ultrasound to the area where treatment will be most effective.
The laser is fired, delivering directed energy to the walls of the problematic vein. This energy will cause the vein to shrink and prevent further blood flow through this area. As a result, blood will be diverted into other veins.
Once treatment has been completed, the probe and the needle are removed and a dressing applied to the wound. Compression bandages will be applied to the area to help circulation while you heal.
The common symptoms of varicose veins include the following:
Aching legs
Swollen ankles
Spider veins
Swollen/twisted veins
Venous eczema
Restless leg syndrome
Ropey/bulging veins
Heavy legs
Leg cramps
