Phoenix Rescue Mission Opens Renovated Men’s Recovery Center
By Claire Natale - Thursday Feb 02, 2023
Phoenix Rescue Mission, the Christ-centered nonprofit providing life-transforming solutions to those experiencing hunger, homelessness, addiction and trauma, is excited to announce the completion of its Expanding Hope Campaign after celebrating its 70th anniversary in November. The campaign raised funds that went toward the upgrade and expansion of the Transforming Lives Center. Community support came from hundreds of local individuals and organizations, including a significant contribution from Thunderbirds Charities. In the last five years, the number of people in the Valley experiencing homelessness has increased by 62%. As rates of homelessness rise, Phoenix Rescue Mission continues to evolve to meet the overwhelming need for dependable resources.

“This new building and renovation project will serve as a catalyst for transformation on a scale we’ve never witnessed before,” says Phoenix Rescue Mission board member and Expanding Hope Campaign chair, Brad Richardson. “Not just because we will be able to serve 200 additional men at any given time – but because of the countless lives these men will touch as fathers, husbands, sons and community members.”

The Transforming Lives Center provides recovery and aftercare services for men with a drug or alcohol use disorder who are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness. The center renovations include a remodel of the existing facility and construction of a completely new residential building. The existing 28,700 square foot Solutions Building was renovated and remodeled to accommodate the additional clients residing in the recently built 56,000 square foot Life Recovery Building. The new building added 90 dorm rooms, 15 offices, three classrooms and common living space and restrooms on each residential floor. The renovated Solutions Building includes a refurbished and expanded kitchen, cafeteria and learning center, which can now serve hundreds of men every day. Advanced medical and dental exam rooms and a dividable fellowship room provide the space to expand Phoenix Rescue Mission’s in-depth recovery program.

Upon completion of both projects, the capacity at the Center increased from 160 to 360, making the recovery program and accompanying resources accessible to many more people. The expansion also allows doubled the number of men it can serve in its Rescue-Assess-Place intake program. Now, 80 men may receive a bed and a behavioral health session to build personalized success plans at any given time. In the last year, Phoenix Rescue Mission has seen a 36% increase in the number of men in programs at the Transforming Lives Center, going from 149 to 202 participants. With plans to grow their number of staff and programs, the nonprofit has intentions of creating even more capacity for men in need in the Valley.

As Phoenix has grown, the Mission has adjusted to meet the most pressing needs of the time. Today, Phoenix Rescue Mission provides residential recovery services, educational assistance, vocational training, homeless outreach services, food assistance and spiritual guidance to those facing poverty, addiction and homelessness. Last year, the Mission also rescued 621 people through homeless street outreach, distributed more than 50,000 food boxes, graduated 68 clients from the long-term recovery program and more.
