North Valley Surgery Center Offers Cutting-Edge Total Joint Program Drawing Patients from Around the Country and Internationally
By Alison M Walsh - Tuesday Nov 08, 2022
In Scottsdale sits one of the most innovative and respected programs in the country for those needing joint surgery, such as for a new or partial hip or knee. The specialty program — which was recognized as an Elite Care Center for Joint Replacement by Hall of Fame Health, an affiliate of the Pro Football Hall of Fame that serves former NFL players and their families — not only offers cutting-edge technology but rapid recovery times, with patients even discharged the same day as surgery.

The Total Joint Program, available at North Valley Surgery Center (NVSC), is the only ambulatory surgery center (ASC) in the state of Arizona to successfully complete the AAAHC Advanced Total Joint Certification, and one of only 24 in the United States. And of the 6,000-8,000 ASCs in the country, only approximately 500 offer total joint replacement at all.

“The certification means that our program demonstrates that we comply with a higher level of expectations designed by experts in the field,” explains Alexandra Denham, the Total Joint Program Nurse Navigator. “There are strict requirements that we follow, including using the most up-to-date equipment possible.”

In fact, the Total Joint Program updated it surgical system to the CORI Robotics System in late 2021. The system provides “real-time characterization of bone and cartilage through landmark collection and point mapping, without preoperative imaging”—meaning that no prior CTs or MRIs are required, and that instead, the doctors can see what they need in real-time, which provides greater accuracy. For hip replacements , the program’s doctors use the VELYS Hip Navigation. Additionally, NVSC’s partnership with Smith and Nephew provides patients with implants to match their lifestyle, including the only knee system with a 30-year wear performance claim approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration—which is more than double the performance expectation for wear compared to conventional technologies.

Beyond its technology, the Total Joint Program’s strict and selective parameters for its doctors and staff means that it boasts some of the country’s most renowned doctors, and that every staff member is specially trained in working with joint replacement patients. This specialty care results in more dedicated care.

Additionally, the program’s concierge service means that each patient has their own care team overseeing their experience and recovery from start to finish, from preparing and educating them for surgery, educating family members, helping with recovery, ensuring a smooth transition of care, setting up physical therapy or home health as needed, and being there for follow-ups during recovery. Having this specialized team focused solely on their care also gives patients the benefit of a quicker recovery, and when discharged to home, patients are able to stay at home.

“It’s a specialized team that’s tailored to fit the needs of each patient,” Denham says. “In a hospital or other facility setting staff members tend to cover all the specialties, but here we have a specialized care team that takes care of our patients.”

Athletes and people from around the world head to Scottsdale for this world-class program, which allows patients to recover and get back to their lives quicker.
