Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS) has expanded its virtual Memory Café program, adding afternoon musical programs on the third Thursday of the month for Oct., Nov. and Dec. The October cafe is Thursday, Oct. 15 from 1-2 p.m. on Zoom. The artist for each will be Sun Joo Lee of Sunshine Music Therapy.
The Memory Café is a meeting place for those with changes in their thinking or memory, mild cognitive impairment or dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder, along with their care partners.
Sun Joo Lee works as a board-certified music therapist (MT-BC) and is certified as a neurologic music therapist fellow. As owner and clinical director of Sunshine Music Therapy LLC, Ms. Lee’s work focuses on neurological diseases, such as strokes, dementia, PD and Alzheimer’s. She also is a musical director of Shine on Your Light choir for people with dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
“Perhaps a silver lining in our current situation,” states JFCS’ Janet Rees, “is that having a virtual Café enables us to provide programming inside people’s homes. No transportation concerns, no rushing to get there on time – just set up the Zoom and you’re there! We are thrilled to present Sun Joo because she is so engaging, encouraging and soothing – in addition to being lots of fun and greatly talented!”
There is no cost to the participants. You must have a computer, tablet, laptop or phone to join in. JFCS will have volunteers available to assist folks coming on – particularly those who haven’t yet used Zoom.
Future musical afternoon Cafés are on Nov. 19 and Dec. 17 from 1-2 p.m.
JFCS also provides Memory Café in the morning on the first Thursday morning of each month. Upcoming Cafés are Nov. 5 (creating a Thanksgiving centerpiece) and Dec. 3 (Winter Holiday Music) at 10 a.m.
