Farmworkers’ Donation Drive Honors Spirit of Late Labor Rights Activist, Cesar Chavez
By Lisa Cardinale - Wednesday Mar 29, 2023
Adelante Healthcare Continues to Advocate for Farmworkers’ Welfare More than 70 Years After Chavez Made it his Mission to Reform Labor Laws

The dreams of the late Cesar Chavez are alive and well today, thanks in part to the committed efforts of Adelante Healthcare workers across Maricopa County. On what would have been the leader’s 96th birthday, March 31 marks the ninth-annual Cesar Chavez Day. In honor of the Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient and renowned labor rights activist, all Adelante Healthcare facilities will be closed in appreciation of his memory.

Cesar Chavez Day is an ideal time for Adelante Healthcare to shine a light on the present-day needs of local farmworkers. The organization is inviting the community to help improve farmworkers’ health conditions by donating as little as $12, which will provide necessary self-care items to workers in need. Cash donations will also qualify for the 2023 Arizona Charitable Tax Credit, which means single taxpayers can donate up to $421 and married filers may donate up to $841.

Chavez spent much of his life advocating for better working and living conditions for farm workers. As early as 1952, he began grassroots efforts for the Latino civil rights group Community Service Organization (CSO) as a way to combat racial and economic discrimination. He later founded the United Farm Workers of America and achieved significant victories for farm workers’ pay and rights during his lifetime. Peaceful protests, including hunger and labor strikes, along with lengthy marches, were just a few of the ways Chavez spearheaded a movement for farm workers’ rights nearly 60 years ago.

The activist once said, “We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community.”

In line with those beliefs, Clinica Adelante was founded in 1979. The treatment center was established to provide medical care to rural laborers in Surprise and El Mirage whose healthcare needs were going unmet. Today, Adelante Healthcare has grown into nine facilities across the state, including Goodyear, Surprise, Peoria, and Buckeye. The core values of the organization still revolve around fairness, dignity, equity and healthcare access for all.
