Esports Tournament Raises $104,062 for Phoenix Children’s Hospital
By Christina Caldwell - Tuesday Jul 28, 2020
Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Axis Replay raised $104,062 for Phoenix Children’s during Extra Life Phoenix, an all-online esports tournament featuring top video game streamers, sportscasters and the public vying for prizes and to raise funds for health, hope and healing at the Hospital.

From July 13-19, gamers 13 years of age and older competed to score spots at the Extra Life Phoenix tournament finals, which took place July 25-26. The two-day streaming event featured four top esports titles – Rocket League sponsored by Cox, Madden NFL 20 sponsored by University of Phoenix, NBA 2K20 and Fortnite. Winning gamers scored cash and prizes and played alongside Twitch streamers like Rocket League players Markydooda, Dazerin and Satthew.

“COVID-19 has impacted nonprofit fundraising throughout the country,” said Steve Schnall, senior vice president and chief development officer at Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation. “This unique event allowed the public to have a good time safely from home while benefitting the work at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, which does not stop during a pandemic. We are most grateful.”

In addition to popular streamers, this streaming event also featured two-time Super Bowl Champion Tyrone Poole, who co-casted the Madden NFL 20 tournament alongside Larry Ridley, sportscaster, TV host and previous voice of the Madden NFL Video Game from 2014-18. Ridley also casted the NBA 2K20 tournament with the Atlanta Dream’s Renee Montgomery.

“We're excited and honored to support the Extra Life Phoenix event to bring awareness to Phoenix Children's Hospital through gaming and esports,” said Allie Young, CEO at Axis Replay. “The work they do is so important for the Phoenix community and we're looking forward to what the next event will bring!”

Extra Life Phoenix was made possible thanks to the following partners: Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, Axis Replay, Angry Crab Shack, Cox, Cxmmunity, La-Z-Boy Furniture, NutriGMR, Raising Cane’s, Swire Coca-Cola, T-Mobile Foundation and University of Phoenix.
