Ballet Arizona Presents the World Premiere of ‘Juan Gabriel’
By Claire Natale - Friday Mar 18, 2022
The music and memory of the late musical icon Juan Gabriel is celebrated once more through the artistic choreography of Ib Andersen, Ballet Arizona’s Artistic Director. This May, Andersen brings Juan Gabriel’s acclaimed performance at the Palacio de Belles Artes to life in a masterpiece ballet that is sure to captivate and inspire audience members from all walks of life. Ballet Arizona is proud to debut the world premiere of Juan Gabriel, May 5 through 8 at Symphony Hall to commemorate the life and music of the famed artist.

Juan Gabriel incorporates the musician’s poetic lyrics and musical themes to bring a new appreciation to the emotional authenticity of this Mexico City-born legend, reflecting the unique vibrancy of Juan Gabriel. Andersen draws inspiration from the passion and style Gabriel exuded in every performance. Viewers of all ages will be moved by the story of Gabriel, who broke cultural and societal barriers, and can expect to feel love, sadness, and joy all in one great evening as Ballet Arizona pays tribute to a master.

The world premiere of Juan Gabriel features original choreography by Andersen and music from Gabriel’s 1990 live album Juan Gabriel en el Palacio de Belles Artes. Adding to the beauty of the music and choreography will be costumes masterfully designed by Mexico City-based designer and fashion house, Carla Fernández. Her designs pay homage to the indigenous and mestizo communities of Mexico, using sustainable textiles and cultural accuracy. Fernández’s designs are ethically crafted, handmade, and avant-garde.

Juan Gabriel is produced by Jacquie and Bennett Dorrance, longtime supporters of Ballet Arizona known for their board service, volunteerism, and philanthropy in the Phoenix community. Additional sponsorship is provided by SRP and Friends of Mexican Art. Juan Gabriel’s opening night sponsor is F. Francis and Dionne Najafi of Pivotal Foundation.

Ticket prices for Juan Gabriel start at $35, with discounts offered for seniors, students, military, and groups. Tickets can be purchased by calling 602.381.1096 or visiting balletaz.org.
