Arizona Tennis Classic Takes Pro Tennis to the Next Level
By Kwyn Johnson - Friday Feb 16, 2024
A rare opportunity for local tennis fans is fast approaching as the Arizona Tennis Classic returns to the Phoenix metropolitan area, March 11-17. The tournament enters its fourth year and second year as a premium ATP Challenger 175, the highest tier of tournament on the ATP Challenger Tour. This elite ATP Challenger 175 category boasts only a handful of events worldwide and the Arizona Tennis Classic will stand alone as the only one in North America. With total prize money at $225,000 – a Challenger Tour record – the competition will be exceptional.

As in previous editions, this year’s tournament will be held at the historic Phoenix Country Club at 2901 N. 7th St and will showcase several of today’s players ranked in the world’s top 50 along with some of the brightest young talent in the sport. The inaugural champion and 2021 Wimbledon Finalist Matteo Berrettini of Italy, as well as the 2022 French Open and US Open Finalist, Casper Ruud from Norway, competed in the 2019 event. Last year’s tournament brought together a strong field of competitors including Berrettini and former top ten players David Goffin of Belgium, Gael Monfils from France, and Diego Schwartzman of Argentina.

“We are thrilled to bring this international sporting event back to Arizona and are confident that local sports fans will be treated to a week of exciting action and entertainment,” said Jonathan Levine, founder of the Arizona Tennis Classic. “Proceeds from the event will benefit Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Serve the Future, which assists youth from underserved local communities through the sport of tennis, making this not only a fantastic event, but also an opportunity to make a positive impact on our community. With a strong field of international competitors and a first-class venue, the Arizona Tennis Classic will continue to be the highlight of the tennis calendar in our Valley of the Sun. Here is your chance to experience the highest level of men’s professional tennis while also supporting two great causes.”

Established in 1978, the ATP Challenger Tour has become a significant part of the tennis landscape with tournaments held across the globe each year. Since its inception, the circuit has grown both in popularity and importance as it evolved into a vital steppingstone for young tennis players looking to advance to the highest levels of the sport.

The ATP Challenger Tour has provided an immense platform for players to showcase their talents and has been recognized for launching the careers of the sport’s most accomplished stars such as Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray. Each of these players have competed in ATP Challenger events at some point in their careers, collecting the valuable ATP ranking points required to perform on the sport’s biggest stages.

Benefitting Phoenix Children’s Hospital, the 2024 Arizona Tennis Classic is presented by Arizona Tennis Charities, a 501 c(3) charitable organization. Each year more than 300 volunteers help make this annual tournament a success and generate much needed support for local charities. In addition to high level professional tennis, guests can enjoy robust concession options and refreshments. Sponsorships and VIP packages are still available. General admission tickets to the weeklong action start at $20 and can be purchased at arizonatennisclassic.com.
